Look for "kcal ME" (metabolizable energy) per cup, per can or per kg. If the label gives kcal per kg, divide by 10 to get kcal per 100 g.

Meals per day

Meals per day is common feeding practice, not a published calorie standard. Ask your vet how often to feed your pet.

Estimated daily energy

Enter your dog's weight to see an estimate of calories per day.

A starting estimate for a healthy pet, not a prescription. Adjust with your veterinarian based on body condition.

Not veterinary advice. These figures are general estimates for healthy dogs and cats. They do not diagnose, treat or replace the advice of a licensed veterinarian. Pets with medical conditions, pregnant or nursing pets, and pets that are underweight or overweight should have their calorie targets set by a vet. If your pet's weight or appetite changes, talk to your veterinarian. See also our AI disclaimer.

How it works

How the pet meal plan generator works

It uses the same calorie engine as the PetKira feeding calculator, then adds a meal split and a weekly layout. Five steps:

  1. 1. Resting energy

The generator starts from the resting energy requirement (RER): 70 x body weight in kg to the power of 0.75. Pounds are converted to kilograms first (1 lb is about 0.4536 kg).

  2. 2. Life stage and activity

RER is multiplied by a factor for the life stage (puppy, kitten, adult neutered or spayed, adult not neutered, senior) and the activity level. Puppies and kittens use one growth factor whatever the activity.

  3. 3. Weight goal

Adults can choose a weight-loss goal, which uses the resting energy of the current weight. Growing pets keep the growth number.

  4. 4. Meals per day

The daily number is split into the meals you choose. The box starts at the common number for the life stage, which you can change.

  5. 5. Your food (optional)

Add kcal per cup or per 100 g from the food label and each meal in the schedule also shows cups or grams.

The generator does not write recipes or list ingredients, and it does not tell you whether a particular food meets your pet's nutrient needs. Meals per day, the sample times and the treat guidance are common practice, not figures from a published calorie standard, so ask your vet what suits your pet. See the factor tables on the feeding calculator page.

Got questions?

Pet meal plan generator FAQ

What is a pet meal plan generator?

This one turns your pet's weight, life stage, activity level and weight goal into a daily calorie target, splits it into meals and lays out a sample 7-day feeding schedule. It does not write recipes, choose ingredients or pick a food brand. For that, ask your vet.

How many meals a day should a dog or cat eat?

Common practice is about 4 meals a day for a puppy under 4 months, 3 for a puppy of 4 to 12 months, 2 for an adult dog, 3 for a kitten and 2 for an adult cat. Meals per day is common feeding practice, not a published calorie standard. Ask your vet how often to feed your pet. Some pets do better on more, smaller meals.

How many calories should a dog eat per meal?

Divide the daily number by the meals you feed. A 10 kg neutered adult dog at moderate activity needs about 630 kcal a day, so about 315 kcal in each of 2 meals (709 a day, about 355 a meal, if intact). Starting point, not veterinary advice.

How many calories should a cat eat per meal?

The same method works for cats. A 4 kg neutered adult cat at moderate activity needs about 238 kcal a day, which is about 119 kcal in each of 2 meals, or about 79 kcal in each of 3 smaller meals. Starting point, not veterinary advice.

How many calories should treats be?

Many veterinary sources suggest keeping treats to about 10% of daily calories. This is common guidance, not a rule. Ask your vet, and take treats out of the meals so the day stays on target. For the 10 kg dog above, about 10% of 630 kcal is 63 kcal a day. Starting point, not veterinary advice.

Can I use the meal plan generator for weight loss?

Yes, for adult dogs and cats. The weight-loss goal uses the resting energy requirement of the current weight, which is 394 kcal a day for a 10 kg dog and 198 kcal for a 4 kg cat. A low-activity cat can already be at that floor. Weight loss should be gradual, and your vet should set the target. Starting point, not veterinary advice.

Does it work for puppies and kittens?

Yes. Puppy and kitten life stages use a growth factor, so the activity and weight-goal controls switch off for them. The meals-per-day box starts at the common number for the stage, and growing pets need their portion rechecked often as they gain weight. Large-breed puppies need carefully controlled growth, so ask your vet.

Is this meal plan generator free? Do I need to sign up?

It is free and there is no sign-up or email step. The calculation runs in your browser from the same engine as the PetKira feeding calculator, and the weight you type is not sent anywhere.
