Every row is calculated the same way, so you can find your puppy's weight even where that weight is unusual for the age. If your puppy is between two rows, use the feeding calculator for the exact weight. Meals per day is common feeding practice, not a published calorie standard; ask your vet.
Not veterinary advice. These figures are general estimates for healthy dogs and cats. They do not diagnose, treat or replace the advice of a licensed veterinarian. Pets with medical conditions, pregnant or nursing pets, and pets that are underweight or overweight should have their calorie targets set by a vet. If your pet's weight or appetite changes, talk to your veterinarian. See also our AI disclaimer.
How to read the chart
Weigh your puppy, find the nearest row, and choose the column for their age. A puppy's calories are 70 x weight in kg0.75 multiplied by a growth factor: 3.0 under 4 months and 2.0 from 4 to 12 months. Activity does not change a growing puppy's number, and the weight-loss goal is switched off for puppies.
The chart uses your puppy's current weight, not the weight they are expected to reach. It has no breed field and no month-by-month ages, only the two growth stages.
A growing puppy's number keeps changing
The factor falls at 4 months, but the weight keeps rising, so the daily total does not simply drop. A 3 kg puppy under 4 months is estimated at about 479 kcal a day. A puppy of 8 kg after 4 months is estimated at about 666 kcal, and one of 15 kg at about 1067 kcal. Starting point, not veterinary advice.
That is why the number goes out of date. Recheck every 2 to 4 weeks is common guidance for a growing puppy, not a figure from a calorie standard. Ask your vet how often to adjust. Large and giant breeds are often fed differently while they grow, and that advice should come from your vet.
A puppy meal at 5 kg
For a 5 kg puppy under 4 months, about 702 kcal a day in 4 meals is roughly 176 kcal per meal. As an example only, a puppy food with 380 kcal per 100 g would be about 185 g a day, or about 46 g per meal. Check the calories on your own food's label, since they vary a lot. Starting point, not veterinary advice.
Dog feeding schedule by age
A common routine is 4 meals a day under 4 months, 3 meals from 4 to 12 months, and 2 meals for an adult dog, kept at steady times. This comes from common practice and is not a published standard. Ask your vet what suits your puppy.
To lay a day out as a 7-day routine with meal times, use the meal plan generator.
Cats too
Kitten feeding chart by weight
Kittens under 1 year use one growth factor, 2.5 x resting energy. A 1 kg kitten is estimated at about 175 kcal a day and a 3 kg kitten at about 399 kcal. Starting point, not veterinary advice.
Like the puppy chart it uses current weight and has no breed field. Kittens are small enough that a few grams matter, so weigh them on kitchen scales and ask your vet how often to recheck. For adult and senior cats, use the cat calorie calculator.
| Current weight | Per day | Per meal (3 meals) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 kg (1.1 lb) | 104 kcal | about 35 kcal |
| 1 kg (2.2 lb) | 175 kcal | about 58 kcal |
| 1.5 kg (3.31 lb) | 237 kcal | about 79 kcal |
| 2 kg (4.41 lb) | 294 kcal | about 98 kcal |
| 3 kg (6.61 lb) | 399 kcal | about 133 kcal |
| 4 kg (8.82 lb) | 495 kcal | about 165 kcal |

Puppy feeding chart FAQ
What is a puppy feeding chart by weight and age?
A table of daily calories for puppies at different current weights, split by growth stage. This chart uses the two puppy stages in the calculator: under 4 months (3.0 x resting energy) and 4 to 12 months (2.0 x). For example, a 5 kg puppy is estimated at about 702 kcal a day under 4 months and about 468 kcal from 4 to 12 months. Starting point, not veterinary advice.
How much should a puppy eat by weight?
Find your puppy's current weight in the chart and read across for their age group. A 10 kg puppy of 4 to 12 months is estimated at about 787 kcal a day, and a 15 kg puppy at about 1067 kcal. To turn calories into cups or grams, enter your puppy food's kcal per cup or per 100 g in the feeding calculator. Starting point, not veterinary advice.
What is the dog feeding schedule by age?
Common practice is about 4 meals a day for a puppy under 4 months, 3 meals from 4 to 12 months, and 2 for an adult dog. Meals per day is common feeding practice, not a published calorie standard. Ask your vet how often to feed your pet. The chart divides each day into that many meals, and the meal plan generator lets you choose the number.
How many meals a day should a puppy eat?
As a starting point, 4 small meals a day under 4 months and 3 from 4 to 12 months is common practice. For a 5 kg puppy under 4 months that is about 176 kcal per meal. Meals per day is common feeding practice, not a published calorie standard. Ask your vet how often to feed your pet. Starting point, not veterinary advice.
Does the puppy feeding chart use age or weight?
Both, in a limited way. The calories come from your puppy's current weight, and the age only decides the growth factor: one for puppies under 4 months and one for puppies of 4 to 12 months. The calculator has no month-by-month ages and no expected adult weight, so it cannot say how big your puppy will get.
Is there a puppy feeding chart by breed?
No. The chart uses weight and the two age groups, with no breed field. Large and giant breeds are often fed differently while they grow, and the right plan for them should come from your vet. Treat this chart as a starting point and use your vet's advice for breed-specific growth.
How often should a growing puppy's food amount be rechecked?
Puppies gain weight quickly, so the number goes out of date. A 5 kg puppy under 4 months is estimated at about 702 kcal, and the same dog at 8 kg after 4 months at about 666 kcal. Recheck every 2 to 4 weeks is common guidance for a growing puppy, not a figure from a calorie standard. Ask your vet how often to adjust. Starting point, not veterinary advice.
Is there a kitten feeding chart?
Yes, a short one is on this page. Kittens under 1 year use 2.5 x resting energy, so a 1 kg kitten is estimated at about 175 kcal a day and a 2 kg kitten at about 294 kcal. It uses current weight and has no breed field. Starting point, not veterinary advice.
